Argentina – Iguazu Falls

After spending the last two days in Buenos Aires it was time to head to the final location of my trip, Iguazu Falls. Located at the northern edge of Argentina, Iguazu Fall is actually a series of 275 waterfalls that stretch 1.4 miles across the Iguazu River that separates Argentina from Brazil.

Recoleta Cemetery is a cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina that contains the graves of many famous Argentines, including Eva Perón and several past presidents of Argentina. The cemetery holds 4700 private family crypts and is an interesting place to visit because of the wide variety of architectural styles of the crypts.

Argentina – Coolest Burger King Ever

I know Argentina is known for it’s amazing steaks and other really delicious food, which I ate a lot of while I was there. But, sometimes when visiting a new city and just wandering around taking photos, I don’t really feel like taking the time or dealing with the language differences to stop and eat at a local restaurant, so I’ll just hit a McDonald’s or other fast food joint for something quick to eat.

So, I was pretty shocked when I went into a Burger King to get a quick lunch and found marble floors and columns, a central domed ceiling with leaded-glass skylights, and frescos on the ceiling, all things most people would not associate with a typical Burger King.

Argentina – Aurora Expeditions – Day 19

At about 7:30 this morning the Polar Pioneer returned to it’s starting location at Ushuaia, Argentina, sadly the great Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Antarctica voyage is over.

Returning to Ushuaia

When I had first starting thinking about going on this cruise I had been a little worried that 19 days at sea on a ship as small at the Polar Pioneer would be a be too long. But I’m amazed at how quickly time on the cruise passed. There was so many amazing thing to see and do on the landing that it was sometimes overwhelming. And even the days at sea were nice because it gave time to get to know the other passengers and to go through the massive amounts of photos and videos I was taking.

Thanks to the Aurora Expeditions staff, the Russian crew, LuminOdyssey and to the rest of the passengers, it was great to meet everyone.

South Georgia – Aurora Expeditions – Day 10

Or last day at South Georgia didn’t start off the best, our early morning Zodiac cruise had to be canceled because of high winds, but that did mean we got a little extra snooze time. And by the time the Polar Pioneer had sailed to the second location of the day, Gold Harbor, the weather had changed to the best weather of the trip.

Gold Harbor had a large rocky beach filled with Elephant Seals looking for romance and some Fur Seals. Just inland of the beach were tens of thousands of the strange fuzzy brown juvenile King Penguins along with their more majestic looking parents. A short hike from the beach was the Bertrab hanging glacier that a group of us walked to for a closer view of the glacier. The view of the glacier was impressive and the glacier was making lots of creaking and cracking noises as the day warmed up, so we hoped to see the glacier calving, but luck wasn’t with us and we had to settle for just enjoying the view.

After we returned to the Polar Pioneer for Lunch the ship sailed to Cooper Bay so that we could make a quick landing on shore to see a colony of Macaroni Penguins. That was followed by a short Zodiac cruise around the area.

I told the pilot of our Zodiac that I was pretty sure we could make it through the rocks if he timed it right, but I couldn't get him to go for it.

The last location for the day was sailing the Polar Pioneer down the Drygalski Fjord. The fjord was lined with towering cliffs and glaciers.

Day 3 at South Georgia started out early again with a pre breakfast Zodiac cruise around Hercules Bay.

After the Zodiac cruise everyone ate breakfast while the Polar Pioneer moved to our next location for the day, Prion Island, a nesting area for Wandering Albatrosses. We spent a couple of hours there before heading back to the ship for lunch.

While we were eating lunch the Polar Pioneer moved a short distance to our third location for the day, Salisbury Plain, the largest area of flat land on South Georgia Island and home to tens of thousands of King Penguins.
