Namibia – Day 17 – Airport

Back at the Windhoek airport where our Namibia adventure started and time to say goodbye to our incredible local guilds and drivers Jeremiah and Festus. They both had truly amazing knowledge of all the wildlife, plants and history of Namibia, plus had a superhuman ability to always be patient, cheerful and friendly with our group of picky and sometimes demanding photographers.

Thanks to Jeremy Woodhouse for putting on this tour, it was an incredible experience, and it was also really great to meet everyone else on the tour.

Namibia – Day 17 – Cheetahs

Our last day in Namibia started with a sunrise game drive to photograph a group of cheetahs. We had seen some cheetahs on our first afternoon at Okonjima, but they were dirty, sleepy, lazy-ass cheetahs that didn’t make for good photos. So this was another opportunity to see some cheetahs. This group turned out to be much more photogenic. After that it was a race to the airport to catch our flights back to Johannesburg.

Namibia – Day 16 – Leopards

Today day was leopard day. We started out the morning on a game drive to try and find leopards. Many of the leopard at Okonjima have radio tracking collars and our guild was using that to help find a leopard. Even with knowing roughly where the leopard was, it took several hours to find one. But when we finally found him we were able to get really close. Then in the late afternoon we went to see a leopard that was kept in a special area because he was unable to be released back into the wild. We were able watch from a blind to see him being feed.

Our final stop for our Namibia photo tour was two nights at the Okonjima Guest Farm, which is also home of the AfriCat Foundation that researches and rehabilitates Namibia’s wild cat population. The day we arrived at Okonjima we went on two game drives. The the first was a late afternoon/sunset drive and then after dinner some of us went on a nighttime game drive.

Namibia – Day 14 – Black Rino

Our next stop was the Grootberg Lodge where we hoped that we would find Black Rinos. We spend almost a full day of searching in our trucks on incredibly rough roads and we had about given up when our guilds spotted fresh signs of rino. The guild were able to track the rino and we were finally able to see a mama rino with her child. During out search we saw lots of other wildlife and had a very close encounter with an elephant.

Namibia – Day 13 – Himba

We went out early in morning looking for a pack of elephants we had send the previous day, but instead saw three young Himba women carrying water back to a different Himba village then the one we had photographed the day before. So we abandoned our search for elephants and photographed the Himba village instead.
